Excursion to Sisimiut – The Town of Technical Education in Greenland – August 12-14, 2017
The http://www.uarctic.org/member-profiles/denmark/8459/arctic-technology-centre-technical-university-of-denmark is pleased to invite UArctic member representatives to participate in a 2-day excursion in Sisimiut, from Saturday August 12 to Monday August 14.
The Sisimiut excursion will include the choice of optional thematic workshops on science or cultural excursion and hike, as well as local / historical visits, and social activity for all. Afterwards, participants can travel to Nuuk either by plane, or by passenger ship that will depart on Monday (11:00 AM) and arrival early on Tuesday (7:30 AM).
Sisimiut has a population of 6000 inhabitants, and as the second largest town in Greenland it is well know for its strong position as a technical education centre. The town houses both ARTEK with its Arctic engineering education and its affiliated research activities, and the Tech College Greenland with a vocational technical school, a high school, and Greenland School of Minerals.
The excursion is hosted by ARTEK and organized in collaboration with Qeqqata Kommunia (Qeqqata municipality) and Tech College Greenland, and as such will give participants insight into the collaboration, interdependency and derived synergy between these institutions; thus serving as an example on how the capacity of educational institutions can be strengthen in remote Arctic regions.
Below you will find detailed information about the participation fee, program, travel (to and from Sisimiut), and local accommodation options.
Note: Due to limited availability and high demand, we recommend that participants make travel and accommodation reservations ASAP, and that they do so before registering online for the Council meeting (i.e. as the choice of accommodation in Sisimiut can determine certain cost options when registering).
The fee to participate in the Pre-Council – Sisimiut Excursion is EUR 75.00, which includes all coffees breaks and lunches marked in the program, the local tour, museum entrance, transportation in Sisimiut, and the Festive Dinner on the 13th. The fee is paid when registering for the Council meeting. The deadline for registration is May 15th.
Note: Arrangements for travel (to and from Sisimiut), local accommodation, and all meals not included in the program are the responsibility of each participant.

Travel to Sisimiut
Participants coming from outside Greenland are strongly encouraged to travel to Sisimiut via Copenhagen. This connection is operated by Air Greenland
Flights via Reykjavik Iceland are possible but not recommendable due to poor connections which might cause extra travelling time and higher prices. This connection is operated by Air Iceland.
Note: Due to the high tourist season, low flight frequency and limited passenger capacity to/in Greenland, we recommend booking tickets as soon as possible as prices can increase dramatically over a short period of time.
Should you need assistance with complex travel itineraries to and within Greenland, we recommend using either of the following Greenlandic travel agencies:
- Greenland Travel www.greenland-travel.com
Travel from Sisimiut to Nuuk
By plane: Air Greenland has a flight to Kangerlussuaq on Monday at 11:25 AM, with several connections to Nuuk. Ticket price between Sisimiut-Nuuk is approximately: 2500 - 3000 DKK / person for a fully restricted one way-ticket.
By ferry: Arctic Umiaq Lines ferry “Sarfaq Ittuk” departs from Sisimiut on Monday at 11:00 AM and arrives in to Nuuk on Tuesday at 07:30 AM.
The ship has a total capacity for 239 passengers, and offers 2 types of accommodation: Cabins with 1, 2, 3 or 4 beds + private bath/toilet, and Couchettes grouped in 2, 4 or 8 berths in each compartment (with shared toilet and bath in the corridor).
Cabins: For 1 person in a shared 4-bed cabin = 2025 DKK. Notes: Tickets for 2, 3 or 4 person cabin categories are only possible if booked as one reservation, which prerequisites coordination between the participants before booking (i.e. name, gender, nationality and date of birth are required). However, if 1 person books an entire 4-bed cabin (as a 1-bed cabin for the price of 3600 DKK), then other participants could still be added after the reservation has been made. We encourage sharing of cabins, as space during the high tourist season will be limited.
Couchettes: For 1 person in a shared 2, 4, or 8 berth compartment = 1325 DKK. Note: to specify preference for compartment size, after making your booking you must send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org stating your preference for a 2, 4 or 8 person compartment. Remember to include your booking number.
Onboard Food and Beverage: The Café Sarfaq on board the ship serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at regular hours. On Tuesday morning, the café will open at 7:00 AM, which gives participants a little half hour to eat breakfast before arrival in Nuuk at 7:30. Breakfast cost 75 DKK per person. Note: All passengers will need to leave their cabins at 6:30 AM allow cleaning before the next boarding.
